Michael Mols spend his youth career at Ajax before transfering to Cambuur, where he made his debut in 1991. After 43 games (13 goals) in two years he then signed with FC Twente, where he spend three years playing 107 games scoring 26 goals. In 1996 he signed with FC Utrecht, where he played 94 games while scoring 49 goals. He was elected Best Footballer of the Year for his performance in 1999. His scoring ability brought hi mto Scottish topclub Glasgow Rangers, where he played for five years scoring 38 goals in 98 matches. With the Rangers he won the Scottish Championship twice and the Scottish Cup twice. Between 2005 and 2007 he played for ADO Den Haag, playing 60 games and scoring 8 goals. His performance earned him a transfer to Feyenoord, where he spent his last two years of his career playing 39 games scoring 4 goals. With Feyenoord he also won the Dutch Cup in 2008. During his career Mols played six games for the Dutch National Team.
