Tim de Cler spent his youth career at AFC Ajax, where he also made his debut in the first team in 1998. He ended up playing 75 games for Ajax in five seasons, before being transferred to AZ Alkmaar where he played 157 games between 2002 and 2007. He then signed with Feyenoord, where he played 87 games in four years. He spent the last two years of his professional career in Cyprus playing for AEK Lamanca. De Cler made his debut for the Dutch National Team in 2004 and was also selected for the 2006 FIFA World CUP and 2008 UEFA CUP team. He won the Dutch Championship twice and the Dutch CUP three times.
